I wanted those interaction modes, you'll recall (as an aside, sitting on a plane on the way home trying to type on the MacBook with the person in front fully reclined was a nightmare, and again the iPad shown through - stick it on your tray and type away on the screen, no fuss and lots less room).Ī luck would have it, the iPad Pro was also available at the Apple Store. On a recent trip to Dagstuhl I tried using the Air as exclusively as possible - note taking, recording thoughts, browsing, searches, presentations… A colleague also had a new MacBook and I played a little with it too (I love the size!). I started using Apple devices many years ago (in around 1987/88 actually, with a wonderful Mac Plus!) and I'm uncomfortable with Windows - don't get me wrong, I am quite appreciative of the strides made in that OS, but it's just not something I want to spend time figuring out (yes, I did just say that… sigh). So, I needed a solution - something thin, light, good battery, powerful, allowing for a multitude of interaction styles, you know… Oh, and for my sins, or whatever, I'm kind of locked in to this ecosystem. Sadly no longer (and honestly, my eyes are not up to the wee screen any more, but it seems to me a shade ridiculous to be so loaded down. The introduced method of electrodepositing robust network-like MH layer made the further application of low-cost superhydrophobic surface with magnesium hydroxide possible.ĭepuis la restriction de l’utilisation de composés à base de chrome (VI) par une directive européenne (Directive 2000/53/CE), en raison de sa toxicité élevée vis-à-vis de l’environnement, les composés à base de terre rare tel que l’oxyde de cérium ont été beaucoup privilégiés en tant qu’alternatifs compatibles avec les normes environnementales et présentant des propriétés comparables à celles des traitements conventionnels à base de Cr(VI) sur de nombreux alliages métalliques. The inhibition efficiency of the layer reached 99.03%, due to its extremely high corrosion resistance (Rct = 2.87 × 10⁵ Ω/cm², Rf = 2.53 × 10⁶ Ω/cm²). The layer also demonstrated good long-term immersion stability, and was still superhydrophobic with 72 h immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution at room temperature. The robust layer kept superhydrophobic until 600 mm abrasion length facing 1000 grit SiC sandpaper under 100 g weight, and with detachment less than 5% after cross hatch tape adhesion test. sliding angle, 2.2°) and self-cleaning property after stearic acid modification. The magnesium hydroxide layer fabricated at the optimum condition (0.5 mol/L magnesium nitrate, 4 mg/L XG, 4 mg/L glucose, 2.6 pH value and 35 mA at 15☌ for 20 min) was with network-like structure, and exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle, 153.56°. Electrodeposition factors such as concentrations of xanthan gum and glucose, bath temperature, pH value of electrolyte and current intensity were studied. In this work, we electrodeposited a robust network-like magnesium hydroxide layer on iron substrate under the structure direction of xanthan gum which formed network with helical conformation at low temperature and proper pH value in aqueous solution. However, magnesium hydroxide superhydrophobic surfaces prepared through traditional electrodeposition method was always fragile and easy to peel off substrate, due to the discontinuous platelet-like structure which led to weak mechanical property. Superhydrophobic surface fabricated with magnesium hydroxide was safe, environment friendly, and of very low cost. Magnesium hydroxide is an innocuous, antibacterial, eco-friendly, and especially cheap material. Comparison with morphologies of deposits obtained by electrodepositions from aqueous magnesium salt electrolytes was also made and discussed.Įconomic cost of raw materials has become an important limiting factor for the further application of superhydrophobic surface. It is shown that the growth of the needles occurs under the conditions of predominant spherical diffusion control, while the contribution of the cylindrical diffusion to the final shapes was negligible. Mechanism of formation of the flower-like forms has been elucidated applying the general theory of disperse deposits formation which is based on the concept of local (spherical and cylindrical)diffusion fields. Aside from that, holes formed from detached hydrogen bubbles of various shapes and sizes, from dish-like holes to those resulting in honeycomb-like structures were also observed. The flower-like forms constructed from very thin needles with sharp tips were predominately formed by electrodeposition at various current densities and with various amounts of electricity. Morphologies of the produced deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)technique. The structure of the formed particles was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which revealed formation of MgO/Mg(OH) 2 mixture by molten salt electrolysis. ![]() The processes of electrodeposition from magnesium nitrate hexahydrate melt by galvanostatic regime of electrolysis have been analyzed. ![]() ![]() Early releases for the console included upgraded ports Trend continued on through the introduction of the Sony PlayStation. To this day, a tall pillar standing near the Mount of Sodom is known as “Lot’s Wife”. According to the biblical narrative, Lot’s wife decided not to heed the angel’s warning, and when she turned back to survey the city’s destruction, God turned her into a pillar of salt. However, they caution Lot and his wife not to turn back and watch the city’s destruction. The angels then revealed their true nature to Lot, urging him and his family to flee the city before the incoming apocalypse. When they hear that Lot was hosting guests, the residents of Sodom surrounded his house, angrily demanding that they are released from his protection. Unbeknownst to him, these travelers are actually angels sent by God to destroy Sodom and the surrounding region. Lot, who inherited the traits of hospitality from his uncle Abraham decides to welcome two travelers into his home. However, God was angry with the people of Sodom, and, wishing to destroy this place of sin, sent Lot two angels to warn him of his plan. Over the years, Lot became a respectable member of Sodom, married a Sodomite, and was appointed mayor of the city his daughters, too, married men of Sodom. Sodom and neighboring kingdom Gomorrah were notorious for being places of wickedness and vice. ![]() In the Bible, Lot, the nephew of Abraham, chose to settle in a stretch of land near the kingdom of Sodom, just north of the Dead Sea. Perhaps the most famous time that the Dead Sea is mentioned in the bible is during the Biblical story that references the Dead Sea is that of Lot’s wife. But the salty lake at the lowest elevation on Earth is probably best known for the story of Masada that has become a symbol of resistance against oppression, and Masada has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another very well-known Biblical story that took place in the vicinity of the Dead Sea is the story of Lot’s wife. The area of Ein Gedi near the Dead Sea, which is a nature reserve today, is believed to be the area where the Biblical David, king to be, hid from King Saul when the latter came after him with the purpose of killing him. The most famous of these were the Essenes, who have left us the original Bible scrolls – but more on them later. Several different sects of Jews used to lives in the caves near the Dead Sea. However, it is also very notable in its own right. ![]() It is most commonly referenced when describing the borders to the land of Israel. The sea is mentioned numerous times in the bible and has long been associated with mysticism, wonderment, and religious significance in the Biblical era. For this reason, many people visit the Dead Sea every year to get special treatments at the spas surrounding it they are joined by tourists who visit the area for its beauty, uniqueness, and luxurious spa resorts.Īs well as being famous for its numerous health benefits and year-round warm climate, the Dead Sea also contains a profound heritage and has played an important role throughout the history of the peoples of the area. The mineral-rich water and mud of the Dead Sea are believed to have numerous benefits for the body, especially for skin, respiratory and arthritic conditions. The special features of the Dead Sea don’t end there: the lake’s waters are a light turquoise-blue color and it is surrounded by golden brown hills here and there, bright white salt crystals jut out of the water. A significant landmark, too salty to sustain any marine life, the Dead Sea is famous for the water’s mysteriously buoyant qualities which allow people to float across the top of the water, without needing to swim. The Dead Sea depth is 304 meters (997 feet), which makes it the deepest hyper-saline lake in the world. And the ugly Twitter stories bar from the official app is not shown. There is no advertising anywhere in sight. It looks really nice, and the app is fast and snappy. This review was conducted on 22 June 2021, using Tweetbot 6.1.2 on an iPhone 6s running iOS 14.6 The crux of it: Tweetbot 6 puts some of the problems of previous versions right, but not enough of them to mean it’s ripe for switching from Twitter’s own iOS app just yet. Were the app to be my main Twitter app again I would be happy to pay it… There is a new subscription model too – either €0.99 a month, or €6.49 a year. I was not the only one – old nerd friend of mine Simon Wheatley was happy to see Tweetbot back as well – and this blog post is as a result of both of us running our critical eye over it. But back in 2018 Twitter’s API changes restricted what Tweetbot could do, rendering it inappropriate for my purposes.īut yesterday I was alerted to the new version of the app – Tweetbot 6 for iOS – that uses Twitter’s new API and was supposed to overcome the shortcomings dating back to 2018. Using an independent app made sense as I could configure how everything would display according to my needs, rather than Twitter chose that for the sake of its advertisers. So it is too simplistic to make it a black/white thing. The city government has been largely black for the last 30 years or so. At the same time, though, some of the worst crimes that have been committed by police in New Orleans have been committed by black officers. Well, the book explores the city’s racial tensions and the disparity of power among white citizens and black citizens. There is a lot in the newspapers right now about the police and what they did during Hurricane Katrina – how does Sothern address the role of the police? Sothern gets close to an important truth about New Orleans when he writes: ‘For those of us who live here, even the wealthy and the privileged, it is impossible to ignore race and poverty regardless of one’s politics or beliefs about the causes of poverty and its link to race, these factors are central in our civic discourse and define daily life in the city.’ His book is a window into the darker side of how power works on a governmental and civic level in New Orleans, and how policy affects the lives of the less privileged in the city. Down in New Orleans offers an invaluable perspective, one that might not be available in books that look at things through a strictly cultural lens. He didn’t just photograph the churches, the Mardi Gras Indians and the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, although he did that brilliantly he also interviewed people and contributed crucial information to our understanding of those traditions. Smith was from a blue-blood uptown family in New Orleans, so it was in no way automatic that he would have had an interest in these traditions of black New Orleans. He referred to these traditions as ‘cultural wetlands’ – places that hadn’t yet been ruined by commercial exploitation.Īll these different elements of New Orleans culture have a kind of umbilical relationship, one to another. He was a photographer who made a pioneering effort to understand the traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians, the spiritualist churches of New Orleans and the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs – in other words, the tap roots of African-American and Creole culture in New Orleans. Smith was a very important figure in New Orleans he died in 2009. Let’s move on to Spirit World by Michael P Smith. Hurricane Katrina has, I think, only intensified people’s awareness of how unusual and precious these cultural expressions are. In the 1990s there began to be a revival of interest in some of those old-time rituals, I’m not sure why. It’s a big thing again now but for a while people didn’t mask as Skeletons or Baby Dolls. They travelled around Louisiana in the 1930s, gathering every conceivable kind of folklore about cooking, ghosts, families, the landscape and all the different Mardi Gras traditions, including the Mardi Gras Indians, the men who mask as Skeletons, and the Baby Dolls, women who dress up every year in fanciful childish costumes. Tallant and Saxon knew New Orleans very well. So the book is a gathering of many voices. The phrase ‘gumbo ya-ya’ is from the Creole and means ‘everyone talking at once’. The word ‘gumbo’ is of African origin and it means, roughly, ‘mixed together’. This is a collection of Louisiana folklore, assembled in the 1930s to my knowledge it has been in print ever since.
